Artist statement

My work starts from the experience of fullness from a canine in the chaotic and empty periodical reality, which the individual cannot in the rapidly changing environment. In this fast-paced changing environment and capitalism, a sense of identity is forced to change constantly and people lives involved in prompt interdisciplinary understanding. People are living just for making money and forgetting about the value and purpose which every individual has to survive in the modern society inevitably. Also, bond relation of mutual trust and devotion is being weakened and the humanity of each individual is being disappeared and destroyed due to discord between own ideal and reality. Therefore, I present a topic that human feels futility in the rapidly changing capitalism society, and this society makes humans live without remembering the precious value of each human being. In the reality like this, the canine which the owner raises provides this bond of trust and devotion that is missing in human relationships. Also, it reminds the problem of humanity through unchanging nature to the owner which contrast to changing and disappearing humanity. In this work, I reference the problem of disappearing humanity and trust through the experience of filling in the emptiness, and present symbols of restoration.

Firstly, the girl represents an image of puberty, that which is located between purity of a child and a desired adult. Also, the girl in the work is the subject who represents increasing responsibility according to the growth and anxiety about independence compressively. Society requires me to have manhood of mature and responsible as the eldest son and father of one family. But my inner psychology sphere still goes through confusion between anxiety and fear of societal beginner, ideal identity and real identity. The image in the work is the expression of anima which is womanhood inside man and avatar at the same time. And it is the symbol of unstable modern people located between social role and individual nature, and as an entity located between purity and desire. Relevant to this, the background symbolizes moving and existence in the middle, because the girl in the work is transitional entity. The background also provides a delicate expression from the beautiful landscape, presenting sorrow and the meaningless of reality. Only the girl and the canine exist in that space without anyone else. The image that there is no one person in the place where there should be many people represents pity mentality to reality about relationships and purity. The bridge and public transportation as well as the place with water are all representative. The bridge links different places; it is the medium which connects human and canine. But at the same time there is anxiety of movement from the existing place (Human nature or purity) to a strange place (competition, society with self-interest). And public transportation symbolizes the life of modern people, there is a fixed route and unless people take off or transfer, it flows through fixed routes. So this work is asking the question; what is forgotten in life in this societal flow. Also, even though water flows constantly, it seems to stop. And it also has meaning of border which divides place into two parts. It represents severance and sense of distance between ideal and reality, and the other way, it also has symbol of restoration like purifying.

The big canine, which exists everywhere, together with the girl, provides restoration and comfort against anxiety and the problems that humans can have. Common loneliness in modern society reminds us of the importance of these relationships. Humans raise canine, but reversely people also receive care from and depends on canine emotionally.
The bigger canine in the work is the part of nature which is most close for getting relationships and communication. The more capitalism and science develop, the more change humans should have, and humans experience confusion due to the loss of identity according to this. Huge canine faces deficiency relation and changing nature as an entity which has unchanging nature, and sometimes it sees same direction with the girl, becomes the earth for the girl. The canine becomes the object that humans can find emotional communion and stability while living with unchanging nature. But due to the stereotype of canine which has a small body size and cute appearance, it can be overlooked and not thought of deeply. So the canine in the work is much bigger than the general dog for revealing veiled purity with unfamiliarity together by changing it to transcendent entity. Human nature can be aroused by facing transcendent entity. Lastly, light appears as various colors in the work changing from moment to moment. Light plays a role to connect and fill the anxious puberty girl who symbolizes modern people in the uneasy society, the canine which is the dependent object of the girl and the place where only the girl and the canine exist with positive energy. By giving actual feeling through strong contrast of objects and delicate and soft color change in the place, the image shows consciousness and unconsciousness. Usually light exposes objects, but too strong light can eliminate objects. I tried to express light which sometimes shows glorious color, and also exposes the world of unconsciousness which hides the entity beyond the light which shows the object about ontological meaning and this light presents a question about entity, that is the question about human nature.

Expressional characteristic of my work is even though it is based on reality, it is not expressed as it is but expressed through subjective interpretation of color with the sense of artist. And the effect of this interpretation is making the actual place seem like a virtual place and maximizing the feeling that people feel inside the place and delivering the feeling that artists feels to the people. That is, it plays a role to stimulate and remind humanity though maximizing sorrowful feeling which is in the beautifulness of image. I think the important role of art in the modern society is to remind us of emotional function and restore humanity. Consideration of human nature by presenting deficiency of relation due to lack of empathic ability, chaos of rapidly changing society and the solitude of humans through the relationship of the huge canine and the girl which is the symbol of me and modern people is the important theme of my work.

극사실적 재현의 판타지이미지를 통한 상실된 주체의 회복

빠르게 변화하는 사회 속에서 자의식은 끊임없이 변화를 요구받으며 즉각적인 이해관계 속에 얽혀 살아가게 된다. 사람들과의 관계 역시 상호신뢰와 헌신의 유대관계는 약해져가며 개인이 지닌 이상과 현실의 불일치로 인한 공허함은 커져만 간다. 포스트 코로나, 비대면화 시대에 이러한 현상은 더 커져만 가고 현대사회의 비인간화 현상이 심화되고 있다. 사람들은 사람과의 관계 맺기보다는 자신만의 공간에서 무엇인가와 살아가며 위로를 얻으며 살아가고 있다. 나는 현대인들이 가지고 있는 관계와 자아, 그에 대한 회복과 치유를 극사실적 재현의 판타지이미지를 통해 표현한다. 작품 속에는 반려 동물과 사춘기소녀, 도시의 풍경과 빛이 등장하며 작품에서 중요하게 작용한다.
판타지는 현실에서의 결핍에서 시작한다. 인간은 현실에서 이룰 수 없는 것이나 바라는 것. 이겨낼 수 없는 현실을 극복하기 위해 판타지를 꿈꾼다. 나는 판타지를 통해 현실을 도피하거나 가리는 역할이 아닌 가리키는 역할로써 현실을 마주하며 회복하기를 바란다. 작품에서 판타지를 극사실적인 표현 방법으로 묘사를 하지만 이 극사실적인 표현법을 통해 감상자들을 현실과 착각하게 만드는데 목적이 있지 않다. 환영이지만 실재같은 허구적 참을 발생시킴으로써 보는 사람으로 하여금 허구적 참을 인식시키고 감상자의 몰입과 참여를 유도한다.

작품에 등장하는 사춘기 소녀는 우리들의 모습을 반영한다. 빠르게 변화하는 무한경쟁의 사회 속에서 우리는 남들과의 비교를 통해 자신을 확인하고, 심리적으로 불안정한 자아에 대해 끊임없이 고민하는 존재가 된다. 사춘기 소녀를 현대인의 상징으로 표현한 것은 아이에서 성인의 경계에 있는 불안정한 심리상태와 자아를 찾아가는 모습이 자존감의 회복이 필요한 현대인과 닮아있다고 생각했기 때문이다. 어른이지만 어른에 익숙하지 않은, 어느새 어른이 되어버린 항상 경계를 걷고 있는 것만 같은 우리를 나타낸다.

반려 동물들은 우리가 가질 수 있는 불안과 문제에 대해 치유와 회복의 길을 열어준다. 갈수록 개인화되어가는 현대사회에서 그 대상들은 변하지 않는 본성을 지닌 존재로서 인간의 결핍되어가는 관계와 변해가는 본성과 마주할 수 있게 해준다. 작은 존재들이 주는 울림은 우리에게 크게 다가온다. 우리는 그 작은 존재들 앞에서 자신을 꾸미거나 이해관계를 생각하며 대하지 않는다. 사회에서 강요되는 모습이 아닌 꾸밈없는 자신의 모습을 발견한다. 우리에게 쉼을 주기도 하고, 꾸밈없는 온전한 자아를 발견하게도 만들며 위안을 얻는 대상이 되기도 한다. 하지만 현실 그 자체의 이미지를 통해서는 깊이 사유되지 못하기 때문에 작품에서는 디지털적인 기술을 사용해서 크기의 변화를 통해 낯설게 보기의 방법으로 신뢰와 관계에 대한 상징성을 극대화화며 환영을 성취한다.

작품의 배경이 되는 도시의 풍경과 빛들은 현실에서 일어날 법한 이미지. 가상 현실에 대한 중심을 잡아주는 역할을 한다. 판타지는 현실이 아니지만 그렇다고 마냥 허구여서는 안된다. 우리가 알고 있고 공감이 가능한 현실이라는 틀에 한정을 시켜 사람들은 그곳에서 또 다른 경험을 하고 현실에서의 결핍을 위로받을 수 있다.

판타지는 그 자체로 가상의 현실, 핍진성을 통해서 충족이 되기 때문에 극사실적인 표현방법이 가진 힘은 유효하다. 화면 곳곳을 관찰하고 묘사하는 일련의 과정을 통해 기계나 사진이 대신할 수 없는 몰입도와 감동을 관람자에게 전달한다. 감상자들은 사람의 손에 의해 세밀히 묘사된 이미지를 관찰하고 자기도 모르게 몰입하게 되며 어느새 작품 속 소녀에 이입이 된다. 이런 일련의 감상 과정을 통해 결핍의 세상에 ‘치유와 회복’이라는 가치를 더할 수 있다. 작품에서 사실주의적 재현은 가상을 실재처럼 보이게 하며 거대해진 반려 대상들, 빛의 표현에 있어 렌즈를 통한 인공적인 플레어, 보케의 표현이나 색감표현을 통해 감상자에게 하여금 극사실적인 표현으로 재현된 이미지가 가상의 이미지, 판타지라는 것을 숨기지 않고 인식시킨다. 환상과 반영이 공존하는 이미지는 현대인들에게 더 이상 낯선 것이 아니라 자연스럽게 받아들여지며 정서적 리얼리티를 느끼고 몰입한다.

극사실적인 표현을 통한 판타지적 이미지는 현실을 감추는 것이 아닌 환상과 현실을 연결하는 매개체가 되며 그리기의 원본성을 통한 실존적 가치의 부여, 판타지적 이미지를 통한 정서적 충족과 같이 가상과 현실의 소통을 통해 현실 문제에 대한 회복의 기회로 삼는다.
